If there is one thing that all residents can agree on, driving on our state’s roads are not safe. Whether it is unsafe road conditions, unsafe roads or just other drivers, driving around New Jersey can be dangerous. Unfortunately, a recent six-vehicle car accident in Kearny drives this point home.

The six-vehicle collision

According to the New Jersey State Police, the multi-vehicle pile-up occurred in Kearny on the New Jersey turnpike, just after 3:30 p.m. NJSP did not release the details of the accident or how it was caused, but at least one person had to be airlifted to a local hospital with serious injuries. And, all the southbound lanes were closed during the initial investigation, which caused delays for three miles beyond the 15W Interchange with Route 280.

What to do after a car accident

Motor vehicle accidents are a fact of life for Monmouth County, Ocean County and Middlesex County, New Jersey, residents. This does not mean that car accident victims are helpless. Indeed, car accident victims are entitled to compensation per state law. Though, to ensure that one actually receives that compensation, they will need to a few things after an accident occurs.

First, call 911. Make sure that help is on the way and do not say that no one is injured. Do not make that assessment or give dispatch a reason not to send out a police officer and ambulance. Even minor car accidents can cause physical trauma. And, often a police report can make any subsequent legal proceeding much easier to prove in one’s favor.

Second, ensure that one’s dashboard camera is protected and take as many pictures as possible. Dashboard camera footage, along with accident scene photographs also ensure that the other driver cannot claim that they did not cause the car accident. Even honest people may be tempted to blame the victim when faced with mounting insurance costs and litigation. Finally, call an attorney.
